John T. Madden - Director

John T. Madden is the Director of the Spartan Marching Band and Associate Director of Bands at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. He has held this position since the fall of 1989. Madden is responsible for the administration and rehearsal of the 300 member Spartan Marching Band. John is the band's exclusive drill designer and also quite active as arranger of much of the band's music.

Mr. Madden's additional responsibilities at Michigan State University School of Music include conducting the MSU Symphony Band as well as the nationally famous Spartan Brass Basketball and Hockey Bands. He is a frequent guest conductor of the MSU Wind Symphony and Chamber Winds. Mr. Madden also serves on the Music Education Faculty, teaching undergraduate conducting and marching band techniques.

Isaiah Odajima - Associate Director

In addition to his duties with the SMB and other athletic bands, Isaiah Odajima is the conductor of the MSU Concert Band and teaches Advanced Conducting in the School of Music. He is a former doctoral teaching assistant of the wind conducting program at MSU and served as a graduate assistant with the Spartan Marching Band. Before coming to MSU, he was at Baylor University for two years as the Assistant Director of Bands and Associate Director of the Golden Wave Marching Band.

Odajima is an active adjudicator/clinician in both concert and marching band venues. He is a drill designer of marching band shows for ensembles across the nation, including public schools in Texas, and colleges such as Baylor University, University of Texas, University of Michigan, University of Minnesota, Iowa State University, Illinois State University, Texas State University, and Clemson University. Odajima received his B.M. from Stephen F. Austin State University and his M.M. in wind conducting from Baylor University.

Glen Brough - Visual and Field Coordinator

Glen Brough has served as the visual and field coordinator for the 300-member Michigan State University Spartan Marching Band since 1988. He was the drum major of the MSU Band from 1976-1979 and has taught drum majors for over 30 years at clinics nationwide, including the MSU Performing Arts Camp and Smith-Walbridge Camp.

Brough has been a visual instructor with the Phantom Regiment Drum & Bugle Corps from Rockford, Illinois. He has worked as the visual designer and marching clinician for numerous Michigan high school bands. He regularly serves as a marching adjudicator and clinician.

Brough is Assistant Director of Admissions at Michigan State University. He has a Master of Arts in educational administration from MSU and a Bachelor of Science in education from Seton Hall University.

Jon Weber - Percussion Instructor

Jon Weber is visiting instructor of percussion at the Michigan State University School of Music. He received a bachelor of music education from Oklahoma State University, and a master of music from Michigan State University. Mr. Weber has performed with the New York Solsti Orchestra, the Lansing Symphony Orchestra, the Brass Band of Battle Creek, and the Santa Clara Vanguard.

He has taught at Oklahoma State University and been involved with the award-winning Spartan Percussion competition line at the PAS international convention, and the Black Gold and Northern Aurora drum and bugle corps. He is a Vic Firth education clinician and Yamaha artist, and a founding member of the percussion/clarinet duo Future Imperative.

Orlando Suttles - Colorguard Instructor

Orlando Suttles is the instructor of the Spartan Marching Band Color Guard. A graduate of MSU with a major in Psychology, Mr. Suttles has an extensive ten-year Color Guard teaching background. He has instructed and choreographed Color Guards for several Michigan High School bands, including Chesaning, Flushing, Linden, and Farmington.

Orlando currently serves as an adjudicator for the Michigan Marching Band Association and the WGI Friendship Cup. During the winter season as a movement and equipment judge, Orlando has been extensively involved in the Michigan Color Guard Circuit, the Midwest Judges Guild and the Winter Guard International Circuits (currently the only state of Michigan judge in WGI).

When not with Color Guards and Bands, Orlando enjoys a career in the Banking industry as a customer relations and marketing specialist.

Tim Kiesling - Voice of the SMB

Tim Kiesling is the distinguished voice of the Spartan Marching Band. He has been the voice of the band since the 1999 football season. His commitment to the Spartan Marching Band is unparalleled, as he commutes to SMB performances from his current home in San Antonio, Texas. Kiesling is the Director of Marketing for Clear Channel Radio in San Antonio, and has additional duties as on air talent for numerous radio stations, and also works as a fill in sports anchor at the NBC TV affiliate in San Antonio.

Kiesling has also served as voice of the Texas State University “Bobcat” Marching band since 2004, and was a popular local radio personality on 99.1 WFMK and Oldies 97.5 from 1996-2001.

Mark Hansen - Photographer

Mark Hansen returns for another season of Spartan Marching Band photography. Since 2001 he has been on the sidelines, camera in hand. A 2004 graduate of Concordia University, Ann Arbor, MI with a bachelor degree in management, he and his wife, Jan, live in Ann Arbor, MI. His daughter, Liesl, just finished five years with SMB last fall as the section leader of the mellophones. Jan will be seen assisting this year with another camera in hand.

Brad Halls - Website Development

Brad Halls has been a software developer since 1987 and webmaster of SpartanBand.net since 2000. He holds a BSE in Engineering from Michigan State and an MS in Computer Science from Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan.

Mr. Halls is an SMB alum, having been a member of the drumline from 1981-86. He is currently a Software Development Manager at UGS in Southfield, Michigan, and lives in Waterford with his wife Heather (also an SMB alum) and their children Emily and Cameron.
